4 Tips for Improving Interpersonal Communication [Ian's Messy Desk]
Posted in Communication
Communication skills are among the most important skills in business. They are equally essential for success in our personal lives. Without communication we are unable to let others know what we think, feel, or want to accomplish. We are unable to build partnerships, motivate others, or resolve conflict.
As we rise higher in an organization, our communication skills become more important, not less.
Here are some 4 for improving your communication skills.
Listen
The old cliché says, we have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we talk. We’ve heard so many times we tend to overlook its importance. Think about the times are you are in conversation and are not really listening? Your mind is on your next meeting, project, dinner or the kids. Maybe you’re busy thinking about the next thing you’re going to say when the speaker takes a breath. In any event, listening skills can be improved.
Respect
One of Dale Carnegie’s points for winning people to your way of thinking is to, “show respect for the other person’s opinions. Never say, ‘You’re wrong.’†Even in situations where communication may be difficult, treating the other person with respect allows more open and constructive exchange of opinions and ideas.
Respond
Don’t react. Control your emotions. If the speaker’s words creates an emotional response in you, listen carefully to the intention and the words. When we are emotional, we often miss critical parts of the message. Be slow to react. Even if you disagree, let the other speaker have their point of view. If you respond in a way that makes the other person defensive, even if you “win†the argument, you can lose something far more valuable.
Practice
Interpersonal communication is a skill and like any other skill, improves with practice. If you find yourself unable to express your thoughts effectively others, spend time those skills. Join Toastmasters or take a Dale Carnegie course. Work with a professional who can help you develop language and communication skills to more clearly express yourself.
