Meebo - messenger anywhere [Hack Your Day]
Doesn’t that title sound like a bad science fiction movie? Anyway, Meebo is a very popular messenger that runs right from your browser, without the need to run a separate application such as Live Messenger or Trillian. The great thing about Meebo is that it’s not just a disposable messenger. You don’t just log in, log out and that’s it, thee are tons of features that you can use, from customization, to actual organization!
For example, you can create a Meebo Login, which will log you in to all you separate accounts at once. This is great if you keep in touch with a few people from Yahoo, a few from AIM, ICQ and so on. Overall it supports six networks, MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, Gtalk and Jabber. You can sign in to any one of these from the home page, but to sign in to more than one, you’ll need the Meebo ID. it’s free and quick, after joining you can add any amount of accounts you want, you can even connect to more than one account in the same network.
Meebo has also released chat rooms, which I wouldn’t call a pioneer move, but it was done Meebo style, with a few surprises. First of all, you can create your own chatroom. In that chatroom, you can choose media to run, so you may have a playlist of Youtube videos if you wish. You can also put a chatroom on your website, where anyone can chat, regardless of being Meebo users or not. Just choose a widget, copy paste the code and you’re done.
The chat interface is customizable of course, you can choose how to display emoticons, sounds and you can change the look as well. Themes range from the obvious “green” and “purple” to the obsessed fan “50 cent” and “B5″. Meebo also has two very surprising options, the ability to launch shared apps, like games, and the ability to share files. The later is usually only found in desktop apps, and while a bit cumbersome, it works.
Overall, Meebo is a great chat application to use. The creators interact a lot with the community and this helps both user experience and the app itself, it has evolved a lot since I first saw it a few years ago. If you need a quick, always available solution, Meebo may be the way forward. On the downside, you do need to keep your browser open and I’ve already said that I for one hate keeping tabs open all the time.
