The Fun “All In One” Workout (Fun and Fitness Friday) [Tech Rest]

2008party
I’ve been working out consistently for 6 years and I’ve finally found a workout that I really enjoy. I’ve listed what I do but what I do is not the point. The point is that I’ve read for years that your workout should be enjoyable and leave you feeling refreshed. This is the first time I can whole-heartedly say “I’m lovin it!”.

The point. You can find a workout that works for you and the demands of your life. Period. Now, for some details about what I do.

Aerobic. About 40 minutes on an exercise bike at a low intensity.

Stretching. After the bike, I do exercises from The Whartons’ Stretch Book. I do most all of the exercises for legs. I’ve found it best to do every exercise for one leg and then switch to another. Also, during my workout for core and upper body, I do stretches as I work that body part.

Strength. I do one exercise for each body part. I pick selected exercises from FrameWork. For simplicity, I don’t do wrist curls. Also, I substitute some Pose Running drills for abductor and adductor exercises.

When?

I get up at 5 AM, drive to work, workout, shower and dress, and clock in about 7:45 AM. I do this workout about twice a week. I plan to add a third workout that focuses on Aerobic exercise.

Equipment?

At the gym, I use the bike, some dumbbells, and a bench. At home, I use a bike, a mat, and Bodylastics Exercise Bands Super System.

Rest?

The best advice I can give you is: start small and build. In addition, I plan a cycle of three weeks that build and one rest week. I only build one component at a time. For instance, these past three weeks, I’ve increased my long ride from 30, to 35, and finally 40 minutes. Next week, I will cut my aerobic time and the number of reps I do when strength training in half. This cycle seems to keep me feeling fresh and making the most progress.

Bottom line?

If it’s fun, you will keep doing it. That should be your number one goal. In addition, this new schedule leaves me feeling like I’ve done everything in as short a time as possible. It also frees up 3 days a week for me to give my best time (first thing in the morning) to writing.

How about you?

Have you found a workout that’s fun? What do you do?
