How To Get The Word Out For Free Or Cheap (Tech Thursday) [Tech Rest]

I recently released my book Escape From Email Hell through Lulu.com. I want to get the word out because I want to sell some books, make some money, and maybe improve the world in a small way.

What about you? Have you written a book or released some other creative work? One way to get the word out is to write and distribute a press release.

Find a sample. Like anything else these days that’s easy enough. Just Google “How to write a press release”.

Send it out. I know there are services out there that cost thousands of dollars to promote your book. More than likely they are worth it but I’m not ready to invest that kind of money in promoting my book. If you are, a firm that Lulu recommends is Newman Communications. Three free or list cost services I used that seemed to work well are:

www.pr.com (free but you have to jump through some hoops)

www.prleap.com (free but like pr.com you have to jump through some hoops)

http://www.pressreleasepoint.com/ (this one costs $12 (USD) but they will submit your press release to over 50 other press release services)

What’s the payoff? Will sending out one press release cause your book to fly off the shelves? No. Will sending it to a bunch of services help your Google ranking and help people find the book? Yes.

Any advice for me? I’m just starting to promote my book. In addition to the press release and using my blog, I am promoting it through speaking engagements and podcasts. Any advice on other avenues to promote the book?
