Clutter 101: Organizing Your Bathroom [Organize IT]

Bedroom

Welcome to another post in my Clutter 101 series, and the second post focusing on dealing with individual rooms around the house. In this post I will focus on the bathroom. While most of the focus on this room typically revolves around keeping it clean and sparkling it is still important to look at all of your space issues, especially considering you will likely have towels, toilet rolls, toiletries, etc to find room for and keep organized.

Get stuff off the floor
Having floor based storage like toilet roll holders and towel rails takes up a lot more space and look more cluttering than having wall attached alternatives. You also want to make sure you have some form of shelving attached to the walls too especially if you lack any form of cabinet or under sink storage.

Get a hamper, bin and basket
After the bedroom, the bathroom is one of the main places you will be changing your clothes. Have a hamper so that you can immediately dump clothes and used towels in it, rather than leaving them on the floor for later. You also want to have a small bin in your bathroom to deal with empty toiletries and toilet rolls. Finally, if you like to read in the bathroom, have a small basket to keep books and magazines together or store them directly on your shelves. Just remember to de-clutter the pile regularly.

The boiler room
If you have a boiler room inside your bedroom then that is a great source of storage space. Build a set of shelves in it, it’s ideal to store stuff like towels. If you don’t have a boiler room, that makes things a bit more tricky. It’s likely you will have to store your towels in another room but if you have read my guide on organizing your bedroom, you should have plenty of space there.

Toiletries
Shampoo, face wash, toothpaste, deodorant…All these toiletries can build up and take space. However, rather like our clothes collection we can de-clutter and organize them more efficiently so they take up less room.

Like clothes you will no doubt have toiletries that you hardly use, if ever. Typically they can be free samples, gifts, out of date bottles etc. Bin them or give them to your friends. What’s left over you can apply the 80/20 rule. You will likely use 20% of your toiletries 80% of the time. Put those items you use daily near to hand, by the sink and bathroom. Store away the rest that you only use on an occasional basis into a box/basket on one of your shelves or in a storage cabinet.
